The Levels workshops are part of the standardised Makaton training programme. They follow a sequential order, building on skills learned in previous Level workshops, to equip learners with the necessary skills to proficiently use Makaton in both personal and professional settings.

Level 1
Level 1 training is the starting point for learning Makaton. It is recommended for parents, family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work, as well as participants who need a more detailed knowledge about using and applying Makaton to develop the communication skills of others. Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme.
Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
If you attend a Level 1 workshop, you will receive a workshop manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your Level 1 training certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.

Level 2
You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary. You will learn more about the importance of symbols and how to personalise the vocabulary to meet the needs of the individuals in your family or your workplace.
You will receive a workshop manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your Level 2 training certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.

Level 3
The Level 3 Workshop concentrates on improving and developing signing and symbol skills. You will learn translation and interpretation skills using signs and symbols. Presentations examine the assessment of users’ needs, adapting communication to suit an individual’s needs and how to develop communication skills. You will revise the signs and symbols you learned on the Level 1 and 2 Workshop and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary.
The Level 3 Workshop is made up of 2 modules and will be delivered over 1 day. Participants must have completed the Level 1 and 2 Workshop. You will receive a workshop manual which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your Level 3 Workshop certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.

Level 4
The Level 4 workshop builds on the skills that you will have acquired in Level 3 and goes into more depth when thinking about interpretation, translation and adapting your communication to keep things simple. You will learn the final stages of the Core Vocabulary; Stages 7 and 8, with a particular focus on ‘time’ concepts .
The Level 4 workshop is made up of 2 modules. Participants must have completed the Level 1 -3 workshops. You will receive a workshop manual which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your Level 4 Workshop certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.
